Despite ongoing supply and safety issues, people eyeing to get a Tesla are in for an EV treat as Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that the company is coming up with a 400-mile range vehicle.
During the company’s shareholders’ meeting, Musk announced that “it won’t be long before we have a 400-mile range car.” The announcement comes in the heels of the Model 3 being recognized as the best-selling electric car in the world for 2018, an impressive feat despite the car’s production woes.
As the Model 3 is the company’s most saleable vehicle, it would seem prudent to expect this new long-range feature from the EV sedan. Current Model 3 units are capable of covering a range of 310 miles on a full charge.
Musk, however, did not announce if the new range target will be possible in current models via software update or if it will be available only to new EVs. Among the Tesla fleet, the Model S has the most range at 370 miles on a full charge. Analysts also expect the second gen Roadster to stretch it even further at 620 miles.
The 400-mile range goal will definitely boost Tesla’s position in the EV market even further and is expected to erase lingering doubts from consumers who feel that they can’t bring Tesla cars on long drives. As it is, Tesla rivals such as the Chevy Bolt EV and the Nissan Leaf Plus can only reach 238 miles and 226 miles, respectively.
Apart from the new range, Tesla’s outspoken CEO is also eyeing the use of other high-speed charging networks. If this comes to light then it would definitely add convenience for Tesla owners planning to go on distant road trips.
Tesla is considered to be a leader in EV innovation and has dramatically changed the direction of the market. Apart from performance, the company is focused on providing sustainable options of mobility to the industry.
The 400-mile range is only one of the future plans that Musk has for his company. The CEO also plans to have a dedicated app and gaming store made available for Tesla owners in the future.
